With Cheltenham Science Festival about to begin, I’m reminded of this portrait session from last year. I’ve previously shared the finished images on my social media, but with the festival inspiring a new generation of curious young minds once again, it felt like the perfect opportunity to revisit it and share the story behind it.

The inspiration actually came from my own son. Like many autistic children, he often develops strong interests around particular activities. At the time, he was fascinated by sensory experiences involving smoke, bubbles, pouring and watching different reactions happen. Anything that created movement, cause and effect, or a little bit of mystery immediately captured his attention. Watching him explore these activities made me think about how naturally science and sensory play can go hand in hand. Children are constantly experimenting, even when they don’t realise it. They’re mixing, pouring, observing, testing and discovering. This scientist portrait was my way of capturing that curiosity.

Using dramatic lighting, props and my handheld smoke machine, I wanted to create an image that felt like a scene from a story rather than a traditional portrait. The smoke added atmosphere and helped create the feeling that something exciting was about to happen.

This image was created with the help of Nigel Wood Photographs at NWP Studios. As I don’t have my own studio, it gave me the perfect space to experiment with lighting and effects to bring this idea to life. If you’re a photographer looking for a professional studio space in Gloucestershire, it’s well worth checking out!

Looking back at these images now, what stands out most isn’t the styling or the effects. It’s the idea behind it.

As parents, we spend so much time supporting our children’s interests, whether that’s science, animals, art, football, dinosaurs, space or something completely unexpected. These passions often become a huge part of their childhood, but they can also change surprisingly quickly. That’s one of the reasons I love creating themed sessions. Rather than focusing on perfect poses, they allow children to immerse themselves in something they genuinely enjoy.

With Cheltenham Science Festival inspiring families once again this year, it got me wondering…

Has your child discovered a new interest?

Perhaps they’ve come home fascinated by experiments, space, engineering or invention. Or perhaps the festival has simply encouraged them to ask even more questions about the world around them. If so, why not celebrate it?

One of my favourite things to do is build creative sessions around the things children love most, creating photographs that capture not just what they looked like at a certain age, but who they were and what excited them. Whether your child dreams of becoming a scientist, loves mixing potions, is obsessed with wildlife, spends every spare moment drawing, loves moving vehicles or has a fascination with something completely unique, there’s often a way to turn that passion into a memorable photographic experience.

Because sometimes the most meaningful portraits aren’t about smiles at all.

They’re about curiosity, imagination and the things that make childhood unforgettable.

If your child has a hobby, interest or obsession that you’d love to remember, my Signature Sessions are designed to bring those passions to life.

Together, we can create a bespoke experience inspired by the things they love most, whether that’s science, animals, nature, art, adventure, fantasy or something completely unique to them. Rather than focusing on posed photographs, these sessions are all about creating authentic moments and imaginative portraits that celebrate who they are right now.

If you’ve been inspired by Cheltenham Science Festival, or your child has recently discovered a new interest they’d love to explore, I’d love to help turn it into a memorable photographic experience.
